Marianthi Liapi is an Assistant Professor of Architectural Technology and Architectural Design at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete (TUC) in Greece and the Research Program Director of the TUC Transformable Intelligent Environments Laboratory (TUC TIE Lab). Her research and design projects are grounded in architecture and technology and from there on they are branching out in schools and maker spaces, cultural settings, projection mapping installations, transformable intelligent environments as well as in extreme environments. She has developed the "Educational Pla(y)ces" methodology (Εκπαιδότοποι in Greek), greatly influenced by her long-term collaboration with developmental psychologist Edith Ackermann, to explore the creative application of design thinking, participatory practices and the maker culture technology in various levels of education. She has also developed, in collaboration with Kostis Oungrinis, the “Sensponsive Architecture” approach for the enhanced implementation of IT in space. Since 2012, she has run and participated in more than 79 private, state-funded and institutional interdisciplinary programs, like the "Contemporary Learning Places" program funded by the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, as well as the "Designed for Better Learning" program and the "Athens Municipal Maker Space”, funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the City of Athens. She has received 17 awards and distinctions for her projects in architecture, technology and education, including the Europe 40 under 40 Architecture Award and two International Design Awards. She holds a Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a MSc degree in Design and Computation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). For her studies in the US, she was awarded scholarships from the Fulbright Foundation, the Michelis Foundation, the Gerontelis Foundation and the MIT SA+P. Since 2021, she is a Fulbright Greece Outreach Ambassador.
