Gryparis Charis

He graduated from the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete in 2008, where he also obtained his Master's (M.Sc., 2010) and Doctoral (Ph.D., 2014) degrees in Organic Chemistry. In addition, he gained four years (2014-2015 & 2019-2021) of postdoctoral/research experience in the Departments of Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering, University of Crete, as well as two years of research experience in a bio-diagnostics company in Belfast, Northern Ireland (2015-2017), before joining the Technical University of Crete. From 2021 up to now, he has been working as a Chemist/Postdoctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Materials for Cultural Heritage and Modern Building (MachMoB) in School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in Chania.
His research interests are focused in the areas of synthesis of hydrophobic/photocatalytic materials for the protection of architectural surfaces, laboratory testing/chemical analyses of mortars and stones, as well as the synthesis of nanomaterials. In addition, he has experience in the fields of organic synthesis, heterogeneous catalysis, bioplastic production from food waste, as well as the synthesis of biopolymers and metal-organic frameworks.
From 2022 up to now, he serves as a teaching assistant into the Laboratory of Technology of Materials in the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete, while during the same academic years he also serves as an assistant (academic fellow) in the Laboratory of Decay and Conservation of Construction Materials of Monuments and Architectural Surfaces, in the same department. Furthermore, during the academic years 2008-2011, he was a laboratory assistant at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete in the undergraduate laboratories of "General Chemistry", "Organic Chemistry" and "Chemistry of Materials", while during the academic years 2012-2014, he was a teaching assistant at the same department of the University of Crete, in the undergraduate courses "Organic Chemistry I", "Organic Chemistry II" and "Chemistry of Biomolecules".
Last, but not least, he has published 14 papers in prestigious international journals, he has 19 participations in national and international scientific conferences and workshops, as well as 3 honorary awards. It is worth mentioning that among the awards, he was selected in 2015 among the 6 top young researchers in Natural Sciences in Greece, representing the country at the prestigious international scientific meeting “65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting”, in which 672 young scientists from 88 countries had the opportunity to meet and attend lectures by 70 Nobel laureates.
