Short biographical note

Aristomenis Varoudakis was born in Chania (1947).
He has received a professional diploma in Architecture from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida,USA ( 1972), obtained two master degrees entitled “Master of Arts in Architecture” (1973) and “Certificate of Urban Studies” at “Regional Development Center”(1973) from the same department.
He worked as a collaborator in “Antoniadis Associates,Architects-Planners”, Miami,Florida,USA (1973-1975) and in the Architectural Office of Kostas Maurakakis, Chania (1977-1981).
In 1981, he establishes his personal architectural firm in collaboration with his brother George Varoudakis.
Worked as a contract lecturer(2004-2006) and was elected as an Associate Professor of Architecture in Architectural Design at the Department of Architecture, Technical University of Crete (2007-2013).
He participated in more than 16 Architectural competitions, receiving 4 first prizes and gained several awards and distinctions.He participated in 13 exhibitions of Architectural work, including a personal exhibition at Benaki Museum of Athens(2009-2010) and was the curator in 2 others.
He has completed more than 136, small and medium scale, project studies most of which have been completed.
More than 50 completed projects of his work have been published in various greek and foreign architectural magazines and in “Αρχιτεκτονικά θέματα και θέματα χώρου και τεχνών” in particular.
He participated in lectures-conferences, conference comities, jury comities in architectural competitions, in national and international scientific comities.
He has been a member of Hellenic Institute of Architecture since 1994.
He taught several undergraduate courses and was the supervisor of past and current diploma projects.

Research Interests

  • The “Mediterranean” expressed within the field of Architectural exercise.
  • Dwelling in the Mediterranean landscape and the emergence of its local characteristics through the international architectural vocabulary and the handmade Cretan constructing tradition.
