Undergraduate Studies

School of Architecture - Technical University of Crete

Program of Studies - 1st Year

1st Semester Courses

Architectural Design Studio 1

The course is an introduction to architectural composition’s basic concepts, tools and methods and focuses on the understanding of the parameters and the complexity of the design process. Students are asked to evaluate, to comment, to set the priorities and transcribe the given data in the design process.

Introduction to Architectural Thinking 1

The course intends to clarify the theoretical knowledge’s contribution to the compositional approach to design. The main educational goal is the comprehension of the architectural problem and its parameters.

Architectural Representation Media

This is an introductory course on the language, the codes and techniques used by architects during the design process in order to represent, conceive and research architectural space.

Mathematics 1

Euclidean geometry. Trigonometry. Limits. The derivative and its applications to optimization problems. The integral. Integration Techniques. Area between two curves. Volume and surface area of solids of revolution. Ordinary differential equations.

History & Theory of Architecture 1

The course raises fundamental issues such as the relation of architectural practice to history and theory, the architect’s formation and profession, the social and cultural value of architecture, the disciplinary nature of architecture and its interaction with science, technology and art, the design process, the pluralism of architectural expression and interpretation, the relative historicity of architectural monuments etc.

Visual Arts 1

The course aims to the enlargement of the students’ visual perception so that they discover the meaning in what they see, and gain their ability to format visual ideas. Students, through a series of exercises - projects are required to explore nature and to observe the particular way each surface receives and reflects the light, and try to reproduce what they see, through the juxtaposition of light and shade.

History of Art 1

The aim of this course is for the students to learn to distinguish the characteristics of each season’s paintings, the kind of harmony that every artists generation tries to achieve, how they interpreted the space, how they created the form, how they handled the light, how they gave tons, how they organized the composition and so forth.

2nd Semester Courses

Architectural Design Studio 2

The course introduces students to a design theme of greater complexity as well as to the analysis of the issues arising from the particular circumstances of a given specific environment (cultural, geographic, material, social and economic).

Introduction to Architectural Thinking 2

The course intends to clarify the theoretical knowledge’s contribution to the compositional approach to design. The main educational goal is the comprehension of the architectural problem and its parameters.

Digital Media in Architectural Design 1

The courses under the umbrella “Digital Media in Architectural Design” as well as the course entitled “Representational media in Architectural design” are founded on the belief that spatial perception and design ability are closely related to the means one is using to represent and conceive space.

Mathematics 2

Polar, cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Vectors. Matrices and determinants. Inner and cross products. Arc length. Conic sections. Moments and center of mass.

History & Theory of Architecture 2

The course objective is to enhance students’ ability to architecturally analyze buildingsfrom a compositional point of view, to evaluate their qualitative characteristics, to apprehend their relation with relevant architectural theories and the conditions of their production

Building Technology: Introduction to Building

Main target of the studio is to teach a methodology that leads to the ability to resolve specific structural and technical problems and at the same time to correlate and connect the construction process with the process of architectural design

Visual Arts 2

The course aims to face the design, not as an exercise of particular dexterity, but as a structure where all the different parts, are a part of the whole.

History of Art 2

The aim of this course is for the students to learn to distinguish the characteristics of each season’s paintings, the kind of harmony that every artists generation tries to achieve, how they interpreted the space, how they created the form, how they handled the light, how they gave tons, how they organized the composition and so forth.
